Looking for a cozy night out? Guys On Ice at Chemainus Theatre offers humor, friendship, and tons of laughs. Plan your night now!
A few days ago, my husband sent me a reminder text about our upcoming date night, and my heart skipped a beat!
It was one of those little moments that reminded me how easily we get caught up in life’s responsibilities and forget to carve out time for what matters most—like quality time with the one you love.
Thankfully, he caught it, and we ended up with another unforgettable night out at our local gem—the Chemainus Theatre.
We’ve been regulars at the theatre for a while now, but we weren’t always “theatre people.” I still remember the first time we sat down to watch a show there. Halfway through Les Miserables, my husband leaned over and whispered,
“Are they going to sing the whole way through?”
Safe to say, we were a little out of our element. Since then, we’ve discovered the magic of live theatre, and Chemainus Theatre has become our go-to spot for date nights.

Most recently, we had the pleasure of seeing Guys On Ice, a delightful, purely Canadian tale about two lifelong friends passing the time ice fishing in northern Ontario. If you’re looking for the perfect date night, this is it.
There’s something uniquely charming about the bond between the characters, Lloyd and Marvin. As they sit side by side in an ice fishing shack, the conversations flow as freely as the cold beer.
They swap stories, crack jokes, share their highs and lows, and find laughter in the most unexpected places—all while staying true to that quintessential Canadian spirit.

The show is packed with humor, heart, and just the right touch of vulnerability. It’s a reminder that the most meaningful moments often happen when we let our guards down, even in the middle of a frozen lake.
While I’ve never been the type to brave the freezing cold of an ice fishing trip (and probably never will!), Guys On Ice made me understand the appeal.
There’s a special bond between two people who can laugh and share life’s ups and downs while sitting in an ice fishing shack in the middle of a frozen lake.

The whole experience is quintessentially Canadian, from the snowsuits and hockey references to the beer and northern Ontario accents. It’s the kind of show that leaves you smiling long after the curtain falls.
And let’s talk about the Playbill Dining Room.
If you’re planning a date night, you absolutely can’t skip dining here before the show. Every visit, we’re treated to delicious food, delightful wine and top-notch service.

The Friday night menu is a culinary delight, with a variety of dishes that pair perfectly with a night at the theatre. Whether it’s a warm soup, a fresh salad, or a hearty entrée, the Playbill offers a dining experience that sets the tone for a relaxed evening.
There’s no wrong choice on the menu, which makes it fun to try something new each time.

We both couldn’t resist the Deconstructed Beef Wellington plated dinner – Puff pastry* with a wild mushroom duxelles. Cooked medium-rare, sous-vide AAA beef tenderloin, seared and served with a demi-glaze sauce, seasonal vegetables, and roasted potatoes. Full Friday Night Menu
