Escape the Summer Heat with ‘9 to 5’: Chemainus Theatre’s Spectacular Summer Season Opener

With its largest cast in five years, ‘9 to 5’ spectacularly launches the summer season at the Chemainus Theatre, offering the perfect escape from the summer heat for a memorable date night.

At The Chemainus Theatre, 9 to 5 means the work day is just getting started! And around here, that means a whole lotta laughs and even more great singing. You may be familiar with the original movie by the same name. I was not. I mean, I had heard of it, but never watched it. So when I came to watch the stage version of 9 to 5, I came with an empty slate.

And I’m glad I did too.

This story masterfully tackles enduring workplace issues with humour and exceptional.

With the largest cast in 5 years, “9 to 5” superbly kicks off summer at the Chemainus theatre. Each actor embodies their character flawlessly, continually surprising with their talent.

And several times throughout the show, Jay leaned over to chuckle in amazement at how great this cast is.

Their vocals are downright amazing too!

Violet, Judy, and Doralee quickly win our hearts with their individual challenges and distinct personalities as they seek to simply do their best at work. With desks full with typewriter, rolodex, note pads and pens, the 1980’s were a different time for women in the office as equality lagged behind today’s standards.

These three women quickly form a bond over a common enemy…their boss, Mr. Hart. His sexist and egotistical demeanour is so despicable, that he is easy to hate. Truly. I found myself squirming in my seat as his leadership style made my skin crawl.

I can’t imagine dealing with him on a daily basis. These three quickly get tired of his antics and as they decide to take matters into their own hands, hilarity ensues.

With just 3 weeks to hatch a plan that will solidify Mr Hart’s fate, can Violet, Judy, Doralee turn the tide for good?

I laughed, I tapped my feet, I commiserated alongside these women. And in the end, I stood in easy, heartfelt applause along with the rest of the audience. Come see for yourself how these three women use their friendship to seek hilarious revenge.
