Discover the Malahat Skywalk on Vancouver Island with breathtaking vista views and interactive fun for the whole family.
I wasn’t sure what to expect other than great views from a high lookout.
The Malahat skywalk has been on our “must-visit” list for a while now and we finally took the opportunity to experience it for ourselves.
All of us were definitely impressed.
The designers thought of everything. From the moment we set foot on the path leading us to the skywalk itself, we enjoyed the journey. A beautiful in-the-trees boardwalk, broken up by simple games and whimsical artistic animal sightings, kept us engaged on our adventure to the sky.
Whether we played tic-tac-toe or moved a marble along a gigantic puzzle, we played (yes, our teenagers played) as we walked.
It’s a brilliant way to make the journey to the skywalk an enjoyable part of the entire experience.
After walking for just 10 minutes we approached the skywalk itself. This 32 metre spiral tower opens up completely so as we walked we always had a view. And it was gorgeous.
The walk to the top seems like it should be difficult. But surprisingly, it never felt like we were climbing that high. The genius design of the skywalk provides a gradual incline so wheelchairs and strollers alike can access the exquisite vistas. It’s quite remarkable.
The ascent felt effortless, and the sweeping panoramic views at the top were nothing short of spectacular.
The Malahat Skywalk isn’t just about stunning scenery
Along the way, informative boards provide intriguing insights into both the Malahat region and the innovative design of the skywalk. It’s a perfect blend of education and entertainment.
As we approached the very top, I was amazed how high above the ground we actually were without feeling tired or out of breath in the slightest. Though the views along the way are beautiful, the panoramic vista is unmatched from the top.
We all lingered here for quite a while.
It was easy to do. Even at the top there’s more interactive fun. A cable net stretches out, providing a see-through floor that looks down 32 metres to the bottom of the structure. I must admit, it took some coaxing from the teens to get me out there.
But eventually, I mustered the courage and walked onto the netting.
Looking down was another matter.
Oh, that got my heart pumping! But it was worth it.
A little elevated heart rate is good for the body, right?
As easy as it is to ascend the skywalk, it’s even easier getting down–thanks to a 20-metre (65-foot) spiral slide. It’s hard not to laugh while sliding because it’s just that fun. There’s something incredibly liberating about racing down a slide as an adult—trust me, you’ll want to experience it for yourself.
There’s no limit to how many times we can experience the slide, so as soon as we all went down, we made the trek back up the skywalk to slide again.
And we all laughed and giggled just as much the second time down.
All that walking and sliding can stir up an appetite. There’s a small canteen on the ground where treats and drinks are available for purchase. It’s easy to see how we can spend so much time here. A small playground is available for children to further their pleasure, even complete with a slack-line.
And if you want to go back a different way, there’s a forest trail that meanders back to the the parking lot.
The Malahat Skywalk isn’t just a really good view.
It’s an immersive experience that combines stunning views, interactive elements, and family-friendly fun into one unforgettable adventure.
Whether you’re an Islander or just visiting, this is a must-see destination that truly encapsulates the beauty and rugged beauty of Vancouver Island.
